今日は、
「オーストラリア、ケアンズの地元新聞トップに掲載された
生徒さんのお話」をしたいと思います。
その生徒さんは、「マホさん」といいます。
先天性の障害をもち、
全身の筋肉が思うように動かず
車いすでの移動を余儀なくされ、
普通に話すことも難しい。
鉛筆を握ることも、
字を書くことも、普通にはできない。
そんなマホさんがビギンに入会されたのは
3年前、高校3年生のときでした。
マホさんを担当している先生が
発音をほめてあげたとき
マホさんは本当にきらきらした笑顔で喜ばれたそうです。
そのとき、先生は思ったそうです。
「たくさん笑って、
楽しい英会話レッスンをしよう！」と・・・
そこから先生との２人３脚のレッスンがはじまりました。
そして今、大学3年生になったマホさんは、
夏休みを利用してオーストラリアのケアンズに
語学留学に旅立つという大きな挑戦を決意されたのです。
留学前には、先生と一緒に
たくさんのカードに英語フレーズを落とし込み
アルバムとして持参しました。
その旅の様子を、オーストラリアの地元新聞社が
トップ記事で紹介したのです。

A Japanese woman with a spirit of
adventure and a desire to learn English
has refused to let her severe disability and communication difficulties
deter her from studying at a Kewarra Beach language school.
Twenty-year-old Maho is one of the newest arrivals
at Sun Pacific College and
has difficulty speaking, walking and evern doing simple things
like eating, brushing her hair and using a pen.
Born with athetoid cerebral palsy, Maho suffers involuntary muscle spasms
and needs a motorised wheelchair to get around,
but has relished the chance to travel overseas,
learn a new language and
stay with and Australian host family.
“I think she is very brave to have undertaken such a trip and
I cannot imagine the process she must have gone through to get here,”
said Sun Pacific general manager Hans von Dietze.
“The thing that’s impressive is she ‘s gone about this by herself.
She has no carer with her.
She wanted a home stay experience.
She wanted to get out there and do this.
We’ve got a local family hosting her nearby,
so she can come to school by wheelchair.
“The fact that she is studying English in Cairns in itself is amazing,”
Mr von Dietze said.
He said the community had helped Maho settle in
-from the caring host family,
to a local electrician sorting out a wheelchair problem for free,
and others taking her to meet local Spinal Awareness Association members.
Maho said her parents had encouraged her to be independent from an early age
and sought out the best medical help
so she could learn how to speak,
move and do things for herself.
“She went to the same kindergarten
that normal children go to and
she did everything herself from when she was little,”
said Sun Pacific administration officer Kiyomi Shinzato.
After attending mainstream schools
-where her favourite subject was maths and
the only blemish on her record card was low marks in physical education-
she enrolled at Tama University in Tokyo and
is now in the third year of a four-year degree.
“She is interested in working in welfare in the future and
she wanted to know what foreign countries do
-maybe Japan and Australia are doing it in different ways,”
Kiyomi said.
“Also she would like to do things by herself.”
Maho said she had made many new friends from around the world
during her Kewarra Beach stay and
was looking forward to seeing more Cairns
and the region before she returned home this month.

帰国後、担当の先生からお便りをいただきました。
「この体験で、マホさんはとても自信がついたご様子です。
秋からのレッスンはTOEIC Bridge→TOEIC と
試験に向けて頑張ることになりました。
場面ごとのフレーズ・カードを作製した利点としては、
(1)お守り→心の支えになった
(2)何度も書き直したのでフレーズ自体を覚えていた
(3)話のタネになった
(4)友達にも「欲しい！」と言われ達成感があった
(5)カードを見るとオーストラリアを想い出せるので宝物になった
マホさんは「普通の事務がしたい」といっていましたが
この夏を終えた今は「英語に関係する何か」も考えられるようになりました。
世界が広がったことが何よりもうれしいです！！！」

はじめての海外。
車いすで飛行機にのり、ホームステイ生活。
言葉や食事が違う国での、新しい人と暮らす生活。
新しいことばかりで不安もいっぱいだったでしょう。
でも、先生と一緒にしっかり準備して、
あとはマホさんの笑顔と勇気で数々の出来事を乗り越え、
周りの方の暖かいご支援もあって、
こんなに素晴らしい体験をされて帰っていらっしゃいました。
